Hello all you aspiring texturers! It's TrentonYo, with a spin on my friend Rayner_XIII's tutorial on how to make a texture pack! Hopefully this will give you all the info you'll need to get your creativity plastered over the wonderful world of Minecraft! As Rayner said on his post, I may as well make a video tutorial between modding and work, so keep an eye open!
Basic Requirements
- Image editor: There are many, MANY, image editing programs you can use for texturing. One thing to look for if you're planning on some advanced texture packs (more than terrain, mobs, or items) is transparency handling, or Alpha channels if you will. Some of these programs are: Gimp(free), or Photoshop(paid). There is one in browser editor that I've seen used and it looks like it can get the job done: Pixlr(free, in browser)
- Fresh minecraft.jar(Mac tutorial on getting that) or other texture pack. I wouldn't recommend the latter unless it was this one.
- Minecraft, to in-game test it.
Steps
- Unarchive your minecraft.jar/BTP(thanks TrentonYo).zip (Those who used the template TP, disregard steps 2-3)
- Select these files: achievement(folder), armor(folder), art(folder), environment(folder), font(folder), gui(folder), item(folder), misc(folder), mob(folder), net(folder), terrain(folder), title(folder), pack(image), particles(image), terrain(image).
- COPYthose files into a folder of its own, title it what you're calling your TP, for simplicity.
- Make your changes to the various .png images, make sure they stay .png!
- Select ALL the folders/images in the %YOURTP% folder that you altered and CMD+click that.
- Archive it all:
- Go ahead and rename that .zip, call it what you want your texture pack to be called in the Texture Pack GUI.
- That's all folks!
Testing
On Mac, until the latest update, the 'Open Texture Packs' button won't likely work for you. Luckily, we have TrentonYo to help us.
Instead of opening the folder via Minecraft, we'll have to access it in Finder.
- Click on Finder>Go>Go To Folder (shift+command+G)
- Type in ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/ or you could copy that.
- Copy your .zip into 'texture packs' folder in the folder we just navigated to,
- Run Minecraft, and select your Texture Pack, then play!
Congratulations! You just made a texture pack! On a Mac! Ask all the questions you want, I'm here to help:)
