According to the macOS and OS X software license agreement[1], macOS should only be installed on Apple Mac devices. Neither the editors of this book nor Wikibooks have any liability over the installation of macOS or OS X guests on VirtualBox or any other violations of the software license.

Download the Mountain Lion Installer. On OS X 10.9, you'll get a warning that you can't downgrade, which is fine. Install VirtualBox 4.3.12, or whatever the latest version is. Make a new VM image. You can use either 'Mac OS X (64 bit)' or the 10.8-specific one - they both seem to work. Starting with OS X Lion, Apple did away with DVDs and other media as a method of installing software and switched to a download model instead.Even so, it's still easy to create a USB installation disk for OS X Lion if you want to install Lion on a freshly formatted hard drive, if you're in an emergency booting situation, or if you need to repair your Mac's hard drive.

This is against the EULA of apple, doing this article IS considered piracy.

Installation script[edit]

The following installation script:

  • ..is free and open-source
  • ..requires only VirtualBox with its Extension Pack and dependencies that can be easily installed in a single command with most open-source package managers
  • ..downloads macOS Catalina, Mojave and High Sierra directly from Apple's servers
  • ..installs macOS without modifying the original Apple binaries and without third-party bootloaders
  • ..creates a VM that is compatible with OpenCore and can be exported (with manual modifications) to KVM/QEMU for near-native performance
  • ..runs on Linux, Windows (WSL, Cygwin), and macOS

Manual installation[edit]

The manual installation requires access to the Mac App Store through an existing installation of macOS.

Create ISO Installation Media[edit]

  1. Download the macOS Installer file from the App Store[2] (OS X El Capitan and Sierra is downloadable from Apple's website).
  2. When download finishes, find the app, right-click and select 'Show Package Contents'.
  3. Inside the sub-folder Contents/SharedSupport you will find a InstallESD.dmg file.
  4. Open 'Disk Utility'
  5. Choose Images > Convert
  6. In the window, choose the InstallESD.dmg to convert and the disk type to be 'DVD/CD-R master for export'. Also choose the name for installer disk and the final destination. Then click 'Convert'.
  7. After conversion completes, you will see a .cdr file in your destination folder.
  8. Open 'Terminal'
  9. Enter hdiutil convert /Your/Path/To/YourCdrFile.cdr -format UDTO -o /Your/Path/To/macOSInstaller.iso
  10. Check destination folder. This is your file for installation in VirtualBox. There should be a .iso file extension.

Installation in VirtualBox[edit]

  1. Open VirtualBox. Click 'new'
  2. Type the name for virtual machine and Mac OS X for type. Choose your version (if you have Mojave or Catalina, choose Mac OS X (64 bit).
  3. Select memory size.
  4. Select 'Create Virtual Disk Now'
  5. Choose VDI for format.
  6. Select storage name and size. The size should be at least 32 GB.
  7. Go to 'Settings'
  8. Go to 'Storage' Tab
  9. In the SATA controller, click 'Add Optical Disk'.
  10. Insert the .iso file.
  11. Go to 'Display' tab.
  12. Set video memory to maximum value.
  13. Quit 'Settings'
  14. Boot by clicking 'Start'.
  15. When it boots, you will see some data being displayed.
  16. This part needs clarification - UEFI Interactive Shell loads, but nothing happens. If you use the command 'exit' you can shift to the EFI menu, but changing the settings doesn't seem to affect the progress of the UEFI Interactive Shell, which stops at the Shell> prompt.
  17. After a while, you will need to choose the language for installation. Choose your own language.
  18. Then you will be asked where to install macOS.
  19. On the upper-left corner, you will see a 'Utilities' button. Click it and select 'Disk Utility'.
  20. You will see a window with different storages on the left. Choose 'VBOX HARDDISK Media'. Note: You may have to select View/View All Devices
  21. Erase the Storage by clicking the 'Erase' button on the top.
  22. You will be prompted to enter the name for the storage. Enter your desired name and continue.
  23. Wait for the process to complete. Then quit Disk Utility.
  24. You will find a new storage media, which is like a hard disk. Choose that storage for the installation of OS X to install.
  25. After installation completes, the virtual machine will automatically shut down. Go to 'Settings'.
  26. Go to 'Storage' section to eject the .iso file.
  27. Boot virtual machine again.
  28. Choose system language.
  29. Choose allow location or not.
  30. You will be asked to enter your Apple ID. Even if you have an Apple ID, do not enter now.
  31. Accept EULA of macOS.
  32. Restore Time Machine Backups (if you have)
  33. You will see the main page of OS X, open App Store.
  34. Enter your Apple ID and sign in..


There should be 2 scenarios..

  • Scenario 1: You will sign in within a short time. Congratulations! You have done it!
  • Scenario 2: It took ages. Stop signing in and check the references below. [2]

OS X Lion virtual machine

The current Mac computer family is based on Intel x86-64 platform and also Mac OS X is optimized for current Intel processors. The only difference between IBM-PC and Macintosh lies in a special EFI BIOS that identifies that is needed for Mac OS X. However, third party developers established project called OSx86, better known as Hackintosh, which allows users to run Mac OS X on non-Apple computers, or in virtualization software.

So let's see how you can run latest Mac OS X Lion in virtual machine created in Oracle VM VirtualBox virtualization software.

How to install Mac OS X Lion to VirtualBox

Step 1 - Install VirtualBox to your computer

You can download free VirtualBox installation package from Oracle website. It has very straightforward installation without any complex settings.

Step 2 - Mac OS X distribution

They are few ways how to install Mac OS X to virtual machine. Advanced users can use original DVD with special boot loaders and test optimal settings for the best Mac OS X performance.

However, we used easier way with a pre-prepared installation image called iATKOS L2, that includes Mac OS X Lion and other utilities, patches as well as hardware drivers that allows users to install Mac OS X. You can Google for it and download it, for example on BitTorrents. Original iATKOS L2 is distributed in DMG format used for Mac OS X installation packages.

Step 3 - Create virtual machine

After you have installed VirtualBox and downloaded iATKOS L2 disk image, it is time to prepare the virtual machine.

To run Mac OS X in virtual machine you need to have processor with Intel VTx, or AMD-v hardware virtualization support. If you don't have it you can also try to install Hackintosh directly to your computer. Read How to create Hackintosh here.

StartVirtualBox and click on New option in the top menu. In welcome screen of the virtual machine wizard, click on Continue button.

Set the VM Name. SetOS Type to Mac OS X and set Version to Mac OS X Server or Mac OS X Server 64 on 64-bit systems (standard Mac OS X is not officially supported in VirtualBox). Click on Continue button.

SetBase memory (RAM) to minimum of 1GB, if you can afford it set it to 2 or more.

In next Virtual Hard Disk screen uncheck the Start-up disk box → Click on Continue button. You will be warned by message, but ignore it and press again Continue button.

In Summary window click on Create button and new virtual machine will be added to the VirtualBox virtual machine list.

Step 4 - Virtual machine settings

Right click on new virtual machine and selectSettings option in pull down menu. Go to the System tab and uncheck box with Enable EFI option.

Click on Display tab and setVideo Memory to 128MB and check the box Enable 3D Acceleration.

Click on Storage tab → Click on hard drive icon next to IDE Controller option → SelectCreate new disk.

In simple virtual disk creation wizard selectVDI (Virtual Box Disk Image) option and click on Continue button → Storage details set to Dynamically allocated and click on Continue button → Set the name, location and size of virtual disk and click on Continue button (min. 15GB recommended) → On summary window click on Create button.

Now you are back to the Storage settings. Click on 'Empty' optical drive → Click on Optical Disk icon in the Attributes area → click on Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file.. and select iATKOS L2 image. Now click on Open button and after that OK button.

Step 5 - Installing Mac OS X

Now the virtual machine is prepared for Mac OS X installation. Double click on new virtual machine and wait until the Mac OS X installation application started.

Select your language and click on Next arrow.

Now you need to prepare installation partition on virtual disk. Click on Utilities option in Top menu and selectDisk Utility.

Select VBOX HARDDISK in Hard Drive list → Select Erase option → Format - Mac OS Extended (Journaled) → set the name of disk and click on Erase.. button. Wait until formatting is finished and close the Disk Utility.

You are back in the Mac OS X installation wizard → Click continue button and Agree with Read Me.

Select the installation hard drive and click on Install button. Now it is time for a break and wait until the installation process will be finished.

After successful installation, the virtual machine will be restarted. If after restart the machine doesn't reboot, simply close the machine and select power off machine and start machine again.

After reboot, or restart you will see an Chameleon bootloader. PressF8 key to open boot option and select by arrow key bootable partition with new installed Mac OS X and press Enter.

Wait until the Mac OS X will start Computer Setup Wizard, where you set configuration of your Mac like region, keyboard type, Apple ID, registration, computer account etc.

After the settings are complete you will be welcomed to Mac OS X Lion desktop.

If you don't want to always use a mounted iATKOS installation image to boot up the system, go the System Preferences → Boot Loader → Boot Setup → check the Default Partition box and type to text box hd(0,2) to set bootable partition and close Bootloader Configuration. Now the system is able to boot without bootable image.

And that's it. You can now start to learn with Mac OS X operating system, install and test Mac applications as well as develop applications for Mac, iPhone or iPad with Xcode.
